How to Preserve and Revive a Sourdough Starter

2025-04-29

With Passover behind us, it is time to bring the sourdough back to life. This method dries your starter into shelf-stable chips before the holiday and wakes it back up afterward, no starter funerals required. It has kept starters going for over a decade.

Preserving Your Starter

  1. Feed your starter until bubbly and active
  2. Spread thinly on parchment paper
  3. Allow to dry completely until brittle (may take 1-5 days depending on climate)
  4. Break into chips or powder
  5. Store in an airtight glass container in a cool, dark place

Bringing It Back to Life

  1. Take 1 oz (about 1/4-1/3 cup) of dried starter chips
  2. Add 1/4 cup lukewarm water and dissolve (about 3 hours)
  3. Feed with 1/4 cup flour and keep warm
  4. Wait 24 hours for bubbles to form
  5. Feed again without discarding
  6. Continue feeding until vigorously active
  7. Return to normal feeding schedule
  8. This method has preserved starters for over a decade! Perfect for resuming your bread baking traditions now that Passover has concluded.

Your pre-Passover starter lives to bake another year.
