The Spiral Challah

The classic round spiral challah says Rosh Hashana like nothing else. The shape symbolizes the cycle of the year, and it is the challah you see in every bakery during the High Holidays. It happens to be one of the easiest festive shapes to master.

Spiral round challah

What You'll Need

  • Challah dough (see the dough recipe below)
  • Round baking pan
  • Cooking spray
  • Egg wash
  • Crumb topping

Shaping the Spiral

  1. Roll the dough into a long snake.
  2. Spiral it from the inside out.
  3. Pinch the end to seal.
  4. Place in a greased round pan.
  5. Let rise.
  6. Brush with egg wash.
  7. Add crumb topping.
  8. Bake for 28 to 35 minutes.
